COP29 host Azerbaijan defends role of oil and gas in climate change talks

Baku still ‘working on’ its own climate plan as president argues fossil fuels will be needed for ‘years to come’

The president of Azerbaijan, host country for the UN COP29 climate summit this year, has defended the country’s fossil fuel sector, arguing its “oil and gas would be needed for years to come” because of European demand.

Ilham Aliyev told a meeting of climate ministers in Berlin on Friday that while Azerbaijan was looking to build its green energy supplies, it was also investing in gas production because “Europe needs more gas” linked to the “geopolitical situation”.

The EU has looked to Azerbaijan for gas in the wake of Russia’s war on Ukraine, with the bloc signing an agreement to double gas imports from the country to 20bn cubic metres by 2027.
