Ever since Vladimir Putin started the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Russian president has sought to depict the war as a remote military operation with no bearing on Moscow and its residents.
But on Tuesday, his efforts were dealt a blow when Ukrainian drones hit a residential building in a suburb of the Russian capital, injuring 8 people and killing one woman, the first time a civilian death has been reported from a drone strike in the Moscow area.
Aleksey, who lives in that suburb, Ramenskoye, some 40km from Moscow’s ring road, said he was woken up at around 3am by the sound of the explosions and could not get back to sleep.
