The US state department has opened an investigation into Harvard University’s eligibility as a participant in the government’s exchange visitor programme, further ratcheting up pressure on the Ivy League institution.
Secretary of state Marco Rubio said in a statement on Wednesday that the investigation into Harvard’s compliance with the regulations governing the scheme would ensure that “State Department programmes do not run contrary to our nation’s interests”.
“The American people have the right to expect their universities to uphold national security, comply with the law, and provide safe environments for all students,” he said.
