Colombia’s former president Álvaro Uribe has been sentenced to 12 years of house arrest following his conviction for witness tampering and bribery, in a case that has divided the South American nation.
Uribe, who dealt severe military blows against leftist rebel groups during his presidency between 2002 and 2010, was also fined $578,000 and barred from public office for more than eight years. His legal team has said they would appeal the conviction.
Uribe was convicted on Monday of bribery and witness tampering in a long-running case over connections to right-wing paramilitary groups, marking the first time that a Colombian former president has been sentenced for a crime. Uribe has long maintained his innocence.
