European leaders will hold consultations over Ukraine with Donald Trump ahead of the US president’s encounter with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, as they seek to shape talks that could determine the continent’s long-term security.
Germany has convened a virtual meeting on Wednesday to discuss ways to exert more pressure on Moscow ahead of pivotal US-led talks in Alaska on Friday on how to end Russia’s three-year war in Ukraine, according to a German government spokesman.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join the leaders of Germany, France, UK, Italy, Poland and Finland to discuss the issues of Russian-occupied territories and security guarantees for Ukraine, as part of a possible ceasefire agreement. Nato secretary-general Mark Rutte, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president António Costa will also attend.
