US Supreme Court to consider legality of Trump’s tariffs in November

Case marks first test of president’s use of emergency powers to impose policies

The US Supreme Court has fast-tracked a challenge to Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping tariffs on dozens of countries in a case that could undermine a key pillar of the president’s second-term agenda.

The top court on Tuesday agreed to hear cases brought by businesses hurt by the levies in the first week of November.

The hearing will be the first time the country’s most powerful bench considers the legality of a crucial Trump policy; previous rulings have been emergency decisions or judicial stays that did not consider the merits of the president’s actions.
