The Trump administration has held talks with the developer of a giant lithium mine in Nevada that may lead to it taking a stake in the business, sending the company’s shares more than 90 per cent higher.
Lithium Americas said on Wednesday that it was in negotiations with the US Department of Energy and carmaker General Motors, one of its investors, about financing support for the Thacker Pass project, which aims to become a top US producer of lithium to be used in electric vehicles.
The talks centre on the $2.3bn loan that Joe Biden’s government approved to help the Canada-based company develop Thacker Pass, which is expected to produce enough lithium to supply 800,000 electric vehicles per year when it comes online.
