German tax authorities are pursuing Asos for unpaid customs duties in a legal dispute that is adding to the pressure on the troubled UK fast-fashion retailer, as it navigates a turnaround.
The dispute relates to customs declarations on Asos shipments crossing the German border over several years, according to four people familiar with the matter.
German authorities notified Asos of the alleged shortfall earlier this year. Its initial assessment put the retailer’s tax bill in the tens of millions of euros, but the online retailer was expecting that amount to be whittled down after it provided more information, some of the people said.
