The University of Essex plans to close its Southend campus next year and cut 400 jobs, citing a sharp fall in international student numbers that has had a detrimental effect on its finances.
On Tuesday the university announced it plans to cut 200 academic posts this academic year and about 200 professional service roles over the next two years. The Southend campus, which is home to the business school and the school of health and social care, will close from summer 2026.
The university attributed the decision to a 52 per cent drop in international student numbers at the campus since 2021-22.
