Donald Trump has revived his threat to bring a lawsuit against Jay Powell for “incompetence”, as the US president said he would name his pick to replace the Federal Reserve chair in January.
Trump on Monday said he would “love to fire” Powell, during a press conference with Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu, repeating his claims that the Fed chair had been “too late” to lower US borrowing costs.
The president signalled he would likely not force Powell out with so little time left in his final term, which expires in May 2026. “We’re so close,” Trump said.
