Washington is evacuating personnel from a military base in Qatar, as the possibility of a US strike on Iran raises fears across the region of a wider conflagration.
A US official on Wednesday said “some people” were leaving Al Udeid air base, Washington’s regional military command, which hosts about 10,000 troops.
An Arab official described the partial withdrawal as a “precaution as of now”, while the Qatari government said the measure was “in response to current regional tensions”. Some British military personnel had also left Al Udeid, UK officials said.
