After an absence of nearly seven years, US diplomats returned to their embassy in Caracas on January 9.
But the reappearance of America’s chargé d’affaires, John McNamara, in the capital did not signify a permanent US presence in Venezuela. McNamara made a short stop to assess a possible reopening of the mission and left straight afterwards.
On a much more dramatic scale, the visit of the US commandos, who swooped on Caracas early on January 3 to capture authoritarian leader Nicolás Maduro, was similarly brief. Two weeks afterwards, the rest of Venezuela’s government, military and security forces remain intact.
