Gold climbs to new record after slide in dollar

Metal has gained more than 20 per cent this year amid geopolitical volatility and questions over US currency

Gold raced to a record high on Wednesday as geopolitical tensions and a weakening dollar extended the precious metal’s gains this year to more than 20 per cent.

The precious metal broke through $5,200 per troy ounce, climbing 1.8 per cent on Wednesday to trade at $5,271. The move follows a 3.4 per cent surge on Tuesday.

Gold has now gained more than 22 per cent this year amid investor concern over US policymaking and a sharp sell-off in the US dollar.
