Donald Trump has called for a new, “modernised” nuclear arms control treaty between Washington and Moscow, instead of extending the expired New Start agreement.
“Rather than extend ‘NEW START’ (A badly negotiated deal by the United States that, aside from everything else, is being grossly violated), we should have our Nuclear Experts work on a new, improved, and modernized Treaty that can last long into the future,” the US president wrote on his Truth Social platform on Thursday.
The New Start treaty, which caps the number of operational nuclear missiles and warheads for the US and Russia, expired on Thursday, sparking fears of a new nuclear arms race.
