‘Culture of silence’: Germany’s Heraeus accused of ignoring fraud whistleblowers

Probe into €460mn scandal finds industrial group failed to act on warnings from employees for more than a decade

Heraeus fostered a “culture of silence” as the German group failed for more than a decade to act on whistleblower warnings about its precious metals business, according to documents seen by the FT.

Frankfurt prosecutors last month confirmed they were investigating 16 current and former employees under suspicion of fraud and embezzlement.

The company has set aside €460mn to cover financial risks related to allegations that metal left in milling equipment during processing at its recycling business was retained by the company despite being rightfully owned by customers.
