Louise Jones-Roberts was putting her children to bed at the end of Britain’s Mother’s Day last Sunday when her phone began to light up.
A message on Instagram, sent by an official at the UK Health Security Agency, said a member of the public diagnosed with potentially deadly meningitis B had visited a nightclub she owned and that they urgently needed to speak to her.
At first, Jones-Roberts wondered if the request was genuine. But confirmation came all too quickly. Within days, Club Chemistry in the south-eastern English city of Canterbury in Kent had been identified as the centre of an outbreak of the contagious disease.
