Donald Trump and the remaking of America’s media order

The president once railed against the ‘fake news’ from the outside. Today, the system itself bears his imprint

In 2016 Donald Trump declared war on the press.

He barred reporters from rallies, mocked them from the podium and popularised a phrase — “fake news”.

Trump, a New York real estate developer long obsessed with his media coverage, had spent much of his career cultivating and clashing with journalists in equal measure. His businesses, he once said, were “props for the show”, because “the show is Trump”.
