The last Hamas commander responsible for the October 7 2023 attack on Israel has been killed in an air strike in Gaza City, the country’s military confirmed on Saturday.
Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the Hamas military chief, had been hunted for years. His predecessors, including Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Marwan Issa were killed in the war that erupted after Hamas murdered more than 1,200 people in Israel.
According to Palestinian media reports and local officials, Israeli air strikes on Friday evening targeted an apartment and nearby vehicle in the Rimal neighbourhood of Gaza City. The attack killed Haddad, his wife and daughter, four additional people and injured 50 more. An Israeli security official said the commander had been under surveillance for more than a week.
