Suspect killed after gunfire exchange with Secret Service outside White House

Donald Trump was in the executive mansion when witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots

A suspected gunman has been killed by law enforcement after opening fire on US Secret Service agents outside the White House.

Shortly after 6pm on Saturday, a man approached a checkpoint and “pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing” before officers returned fire, according to US Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi. Guglielmi said the suspect was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No law enforcement officer was injured in the shooting but a bystander was wounded after being struck by gunfire. The person’s condition was unclear and it was not known if they had been shot by the suspect or by police.
