The US Senate has approved a war powers resolution intended to rein in Donald Trump’s authority to restart hostilities with Iran, in a major rebuke of the president’s handling of the conflict in the Middle East.
The Republican-controlled Senate voted 50-48 on Tuesday afternoon in favour of the resolution, which instructs Trump to end the Iran war or seek authorisation from Congress to continue the conflict.
The vote is largely symbolic and lawmakers are divided about whether it is legally binding. But it comes at a critical moment in the Iran war and underscores growing discontent on Capitol Hill over Trump’s handling of the conflict and, more recently, a shaky truce put in place by US and Iranian negotiators.
