Sergiy Maidukov is a Kyiv-based illustrator whose work has appeared in this magazine, as well as The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He was born in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, which is now occupied by Russia and its militant proxies. Maidukov has been working with journalists covering the conflict. His pictures, presented here with his comments, capture the dread and danger of the war as it rolled towards the capital.
