Sergiy Maidukov is a Kyiv-based illustrator whose work has appeared in this magazine, as well as The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. He was born in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, which is now occupied by Russia and its militant proxies. Maidukov has been working with journalists covering the conflict. His pictures, presented here with his comments, capture the dread and danger of the war as it rolled towards the capital.February 25

On day two of the war, all I can think to do that is certain to help Ukraine is give blood. So four of my friends and I queued for several hours, the line behind us growing ever longer as we waited. It was the first time in my adult life I overcame my fear of needles and donated blood.
