How the EU is helping preserve Ukrainian culture during the war

Throughout Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, European countries have been imposing rounds of sanctions to try and stop Moscow funding its aggression. But if sanctions strike at the heart of Russia’s war efforts, Mariya Gabriel thinks culture can be a powerful means for peace too.

The European commissioner for culture says she still has fresh in her mind the images of the Kyiv Classic Symphony Orchestra performing national composers and Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” in the Ukrainian capital’s Independence Square just weeks into the war.
