Total receipts at Sotheby's five-day sale of Asian art, jewellery and watches came to $140.7m (€103m, £81m).
The auction house had aimed to book sales of more than $250m, up from $200m at its 2007 Hong Kong autumn auction.
About one-third of the more than 1,300 lots on auction this year went unsold and some showcase items changed hands for less money than had been expected.
