The rupee sank to an all-time low last week and Standard & Poor's, the global rating agency, downgraded the rating on Pakistan's sovereign debt to triple C-plus.
Western defence officials say Mr Zardari will also renew Islamabad's request for new reactors to boost Pakistan's civilian nuclear power sector.
Some in Pakistan suggest Mr Zardari may have made his task harder by failing to follow the practice of past presidents who made China their first overseas destination on taking office. Bush, the US president, and Manmohan Singh, India's prime minister.
