Spat over China TV rights exposes disunited state of English football

The Chinese broadcast rights for top-tier English football, potentially the largest market for the world's most successful football competition, have forced the games owners to paper over deep splits between the league's big and small clubs.

The divide pits clubs such as Manchester United and Chelsea, which are household names and successful brands in much of Asia, against local teams such as Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers, which have cult followings at best.

The larger clubs have pushed for a return to a free-to-air model in football-mad China, which potentially gives their games exposure to hundreds of millions of viewers.
