Islamist suicide bombers blamed for deaths of 38 on the Moscow metro

Russian authorities blamed Islamist militants from the North Caucasus after two female suicide bombers killed at least 38 people and injured 64 in attacks on Moscow's underground during the morning rush hour yesterday.

The first explosion tore through the second carriage of a train at Lubyanka metro station at 7.50am. The second, about 40 minutes later, went off in a carriage at Park Kultury station, opposite Gorky Park.

Aleksandr Bortnikov, head of the Federal Security Service, the secret police, said: “The preliminary version indicates the terrorist act was carried out by a group with links to the Northern Caucasus, and we consider this the most likely version.”
