SEOUL'S ALLIES CALL FOR ‘STERN RESPONSE' TO N KOREA

Seoul's allies rallied yesterday in support of a “stern response” to North Korea's torpedoing of a warship in what amounts to the bloodiest attack against South Korea by its neighbour for more than two decades.

The US, Japan, Australia and Britain all expressed outrage after international investigators concluded that a North Korean submarine was responsible for torpedoing a 104-man corvette, killing 46 crewmen, in March.

South Korea has suggested referring Pyongyang to the United Nations Security Council for additional sanctions. The Obama administration faces pressure from the US Congress to reinstate North Korea on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, which would open a path for freezing North Korea's international bank accounts.
