Producers’ margins under pressure from supermarkets

Competition in China’s supermarket sector is squeezing margins for the country’s processed food producers, an industry already under pressure from rising costs and Beijing’s anti-inflation drive.

Dairy producers say they are expecting the imminent imposition of price controls.

But for now, pressure to contain prices is coming not from the government but from retailers. They cannot afford to raise prices without losing customers, so are refusing to pass along producers’ price increases.
