Brazilian factories tested by Chinese imports

Step into the mall known colloquially in São Paulo as “Xing Ling” and you could be forgiven for thinking you had somehow wandered into Shenzhen, the Chinese boom town that borders Hong Kong.

Like the shopping centres in Shenzhen that sell pirated goods to rich Hong Kong consumers, the crowded mall in central São Paulo specialises in cheap Chinese-made knock-offs, from phones to imitation Rolex watches and luxury bags and sunglasses.

“That’s not really a Nokia,” admits a Chinese shop attendant in a mobile phone store. Speaking in broken Portuguese, he points to the Nokia brand on one of the phones. “That’s just a sticker.”
