Defiant Mubarak cedes some power

Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak gave a defiant speech to his nation on television on Thursday night, and attempted to wrap himself in the mantle of the protesters on Tahrir Square.

Conceding he would delegate some power to the vice-president, he reiteraqted he intended to stay in power until September elections. He said he was fully aware of the crossroads the nation was at. He called this a defining moment in Egypt’s history. It was unclear what powers he would shed or when.

“My priority now is to restore confidence among all Egyptians ... All Egyptians are lying the same trench and we should continue with the dialogue we have started.”
