Livestock disease to hit food supply in N Korea

North Korea has confirmed a large-scale outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that is expected to worsen food shortages in the impoverished communist state.

The country’s official KCNA news agency said on Friday that the highly contagious livestock disease had broken out in the capital Pyongyang late last year and had spread to eight provinces since then, killing thousands of animals. More than 10,000 oxen, cattle and pigs had been infected.

North Korea already suffers serious food shortages – recent floods have hit grain output and South Korea and the US have sharply reduced food aid amid deteriorating political relations.
