Strauss-Kahn appears in NY court

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the head of the International Monetary Fund, was denied bail on Monday after being formally charged in a New York court over the alleged sexual assault of a maid at a hotel in the city.

The prominent French politician, who was considering running in next year’s presidential race, was remanded in custody until a further hearing on Friday, after a judge at the Manhattan criminal court decided against releasing him on bail of $1m put up by the wife of the IMF chief.

Tristane Banon, a 31-year-old novelist, alleges Mr Strauss-Kahn attacked her during an interview in an empty apartment in 2002.
