Huawei hires former UK government official

Huawei Technologies on Monday said it had hired John Suffolk, the former chief information officer for the UK government, as a cyber-security official as the Chinese telecommunications equipment maker tries to reassure customers concerned that it has links to the Chinese military.

Mr Suffolk, who oversaw UK government IT projects for nearly five years, is to develop Huawei’s cyber security programme, which will aim to both protect both its telecoms equipment from possible hacking attempts and improve communication with consumers and governments.

Huawei said: “Mr. Suffolk is not engaged as a lobbyist, his role will be to help build a more comprehensive security system and communicate Huawei’s capabilities in security to customers.”
