Should I dumb myself down in order to get a job?

I am looking for a job in finance but keep on getting turned down – both before and after an interview – on the grounds that I am “overqualified”. I don’t understand what is so wrong with overqualification. Do they think I will be difficult to work with? Or do they mean that I’m too old (I’m in my 40s)?

Should I dumb myself down and pretend that I don’t have three degrees and have never done a fairly senior job in private equity? The truth is that I’m not at all ambitious or status-conscious and don’t see why people should hold past success against me.
