Whitehall security expert to examine Huawei centre

Whitehall’s leading security official is to examine the workings of the Cyber Security Evaluation Centre in Banbury, established three years ago by Huawei, the Chinese telecoms group

Last month, parliament’s intelligence and ecurity committee issued a scathing report about the centre, set up to examine equipment and software used by Huawei, and ensure it is not vulnerable to cyber attack.

The committee concluded it was “highly unlikely to provide, or to be seen to provide, the required levels of security assurance,” and was surprised that the staff who checked the intricate inner workings of Huawei’s equipment were paid for, and managed by, the Chinese group.
