The Pentagon began evacuating personnel from the US embassy in Yemen yesterday after a potential al-Qaeda terrorism threat forced the closure of embassies across the Middle East and Africa.
The state department also warned American citizens in Yemen to leave the country immediately and described the threat level as “extremely high”.
The unprecedented security precautions reflect the growing importance of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemen-based affiliate of the terrorist network that is believed to be the source of the threat and which has become one of the central targets of US counter-terrorism efforts.
