Gary Locke, US ambassador to China, will step down early in 2014 and return to Seattle to rejoin his wife and children, who left Beijing earlier this year.
Mr Locke, the first Chinese-American to hold the post of US ambassador to China, was involved in some of the most sensational and contentious bilateral incidents in recent years and was point-man for the Obama administration’s much-heralded “pivot” to Asia.
“Helping manage one of the most vitally important bilateral relationships for the US, with so many critical American interests at stake, has been an immense and rewarding challenge,” Mr Locke said on Wednesday. “And living in China while representing the US has been an exciting privilege for our entire family.”
