British Museum to host China exhibition

Rare treasures from the “golden period” of Chinese civilisation under the Ming dynasty are to go on display in a flagship exhibition at the British Museum.

China emerged as a superpower during the period 1400-1450, when its borders were set, power was centralised in a new capital at Beijing and construction began on the Forbidden City, the palace complex still featured today on coins and military uniforms.

Aspects of this pivotal period in China’s history explored by the exhibition include its “unprecedented contact” with the outside world through maritime and diplomatic contacts that extended as far as Africa, Bengal, Iran and Mecca.
