S Korea police identify decayed body as fugitive ferry owner

The body of a fugitive businessman sought over April’s tragic ferry sinking was found last month in southern South Korea, ending a nationwide manhunt.

Police said on Tuesday that a badly decayed body found on June 12 is that of Yoo Byeong-eon, the de facto owner of Chonghaejin Marine, the operator of the Sewol ferry that capsized in April, killing more than 300 people.

Mr Yoo has been the subject of a large-scale manhunt by police since the ferry disaster, as Chonghaejin’s lack of investment in safety training and alleged breaches of regulations such as cargo overloading are believed to have contributed to the ferry sinking.
