Greek hard-left party pledges to loosen economic grip of ‘oligarchs’

Greece’s hard-left Syriza party says one of its top priorities if it comes to power in the January 25 general election will be to tackle the “oligarchs”’ grip on the Greek economy, starting with their stranglehold on the media.

Any move against the clique of powerful tycoons that dominate large parts of Greek business is likely to be contentious, but could be welcomed both by ordinary Greeks and the country’s international lenders.

“The oligarchs are high on our agenda,” George Stathakis, the shadow development minister and the party’s senior economic spokesperson said in an interview with the Financial Times. “They will be a priority for action.”
