Huawei rebuts spying accusations

Ren Zhengfei, the normally secretive chairman of Huawei, sought to dismiss claims by the US government that the Chinese telecoms equipment company engages in spying on behalf of the Chinese government.

“We have never been asked by our government to spy,” he said flatly, in an hour-long town hall-style meeting that was broadcast online from the World Economic Forum in Davos.

This is not the first time Huawei has responded to such accusations, but it was the most high-profile public rebuttal from the reclusive executive.
