Sydney positions Barangaroo project as Asia finance hub

The first of seven skyscrapers at the Barangaroo development on Sydney’s waterfront is almost complete, bringing a two-decade-old dream to create a financial services hub to rival the best in Asia closer to fruition.

“This project is the biggest building project in Australia at this time,” says Andrew Wilson, managing director of Lend Lease Barangaroo South. “We now have businesses that are based in Singapore and Southeast Asia looking to make Sydney their base.”

There is no doubting the scale of the A$7bn (US$5.4bn) project, which is transforming a 22-hectare container shipping wharf into a commercial, residential and hospitality precinct that developers say will employ 24,000 people by 2023.
