Xi Jinping fans swamp protesters during Mall procession

For one morning, a small patch of London turned a deep shade of red to greet the Chinese president as he rode down the Mall with the Queen in a procession of gilded horse-drawn carriages.

Visible everywhere was Beijing’s power and influence. Xi Jinping was cheered by throngs of his subjects waving Chinese banners and flags; many were Chinese students bussed in from across the UK.

Dissent was confined to a short section on one side of the road, and the many police present ensured that anyone who was not a friend of the visiting Communist leader stayed in that section.
