WHO declares Zika virus a global health emergency

Zika has been declared a global emergency by the World Health Organisation as the number of suspected birth defects linked to the mosquito-borne virus continues to rise.

Margaret Chan, WHO director-general, said the surge in cases of babies born with underdeveloped brains in Brazil and other parts of Latin America represented an “extraordinary event and public health threat to other parts of the world”, reports Andrew Ward in London.

“A co-ordinated international response is needed to reduce the risk of further international spread,” she added.
