New York on high alert after bomb blast

New York City was on high alert on Sunday after a powerful explosion rocked Manhattan just hours before President Barack Obama and other world leaders were due to arrive in the city for annual meetings at the United Nations.

Andrew Cuomo, New York governor, said early indications suggested the terrorist attack, which did not kill anyone, was not linked to Isis or any other international group.

With a second suspicious device deactivated four blocks away from the Chelsea neighbourhood where the explosion went off on Saturday evening, the authorities were investigating a potentially broader effort to disrupt the city.
