The protocol-busting phone call between Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen and US president-elect Donald Trump has been greeted with consternation in Beijing, alarm among the US foreign policy establishment — but delight on the streets of Taipei.
“For us it was like, yay, Taiwan, we’re here,” said Hsu Yu Shan, a 32-year-old events compère. “We were happy to be more popular and that people will know about us.”
Taiwanese national identity is felt particularly strongly among the younger generation, many of whom favour independence and are deeply frustrated over Taiwan’s lack of international recognition.
