South Korean president to meet US general as tensions rise

South Korean president Moon Jae-in will meet the US’s top military official on Monday as simmering tensions between Washington and Pyongyang threaten to spill over into conflict.

Liberal-leaning Mr Moon will meet Marine General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, to discuss the nations’ bilateral alliance and the growing threat from North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missiles, the South Korean presidential Blue House said.

The peninsula is on edge after a week-long war of words between the US and North Korea sparked some concern that a conflict was imminent.
