More than 200 dead as earthquake hits Mexico

More than 200 people, including over 20 school children were killed after an earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, toppling scores of buildings in the capital Mexico City.

The earthquake happened less than two weeks after a devastating quake in the south of the country. It also came on the anniversary of the 1985 quake that flattened much of Mexico City and killed at least 9,500.

Tuesday’s quake was recorded by the Mexican National Seismological Service at a magnitude of 7.1. In the south of the capital, parts of the four-storey Enrique Rebsamen school collapsed, trapping children inside. Television reports said the bodies of 22 children and two adults had been recovered, and about 30 children and eight adults were believed to still be trapped.
