Why the pious right is unruffled by Trump’s exploits

Last year, Francesca Tripodi, a sociologist and media analyst, explored an intriguing question: why do so many evangelical Christians support Donald Trump?

The answer isn’t obvious. Mr Trump doesn’t present himself as a pious figure: he has married three times, openly boasted about grabbing women and is regularly creative with the truth. And he has built a gambling empire, to boot.

But 80 per cent of white evangelicals voted for him in 2016 — a higher proportion than backed Ronald Reagan or George W Bush (a self-styled evangelical). A new survey by the Public Religion Research Institute shows that some 75 per cent of white evangelicals approve of Mr Trump.
